#OndoDecides2020: Voters Ignore INEC’s Directive On Facemasks, Social Distancing | Independent Newspapers Nigeria

Akure- Despite threats by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it will ensure voters in Ondo state today comply with the directives of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 during voting, many voters have flouted the directives, arriving at voting centres without face masks while others clustered together on queues without any form of social distancing.

Some of the voters who spoke with our correspondent jokingly said there is no Coronavirus in Nigeria again, while others said it is a virus meant for the wealthy alone.

Deborah Akinsulire, a voter in Akure South LGA said asking voters to wear facemask and observe social distancing on election day is unnecessary as the same law was not applied during the various rallies of the political parties.

“During the rallies and campaigns, people stayed together and did not wear facemasks, has Corona (virus) increased in Ondo state. So, what is INEC talking about? God has helped us send out Corona out of Ondo state. We don’t have Corona here again”.

Speaking with our correspondent, a security agent said their primary duty is to ensure the safety of the electoral materials and INEC officials.

“There is nothing we can do about that. It is difficult to enforce. If someone fails to wear facemasks and you asked me to drag out the person from the queue, definitely I will need to make contact with the person. How am I sure the person doesn’t have the virus?  I think the voters have to take responsibility for their health”, he said.
