Ignore FIFA Rankings, Focus On AFCON Qualifiers- Oloyede

Lagos– Ex-international, Taiwo Oloyede has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Super Eagles to ignore the latest FIFA rankings but should rather focus on next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

“What should be paramount on the minds of NFF officials and the technical crew as well as the Super Eagles players should be how to execute and win the remaining two AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho.

“I don’t really think we should be worrying ourselves with the FIFA rankings because even if we move up the ranking and fail to win our matches, we will still drop on the table,” he said.

World soccer governing body on Thursday morning released its latest ranking for the month of February and Nigeria’s Super Eagles dropped one spot.

Nigeria was ranked 35th with 1474 points at the close of 2020 after the team failed to secure a win in the 2021 AFCON qualifier against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.

The latest ranking released indicated that the three-time African champions dropped to 36th position with the same number of points.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal remained the Africa Top team and placed 20th in the world.

FIFA world ranking for the start of 2021 with the top 10 remaining unchanged from the sides that closed out 2020 as the world’s leading footballing nations.
