Ian Wright Urges Arsenal To Continue Aouar Pursuit | Independent Newspapers Nigeria

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been urged by club legend Ian Wright to go back in for Houssem Aouar to provide the perfect midfield foil alongside Thomas Partey.

Arsenal were in hot pursuit of both Aouar and Partey in the summer transfer window, and the Gunners eventually wrapped up a £45million move for Partey from Atletico Madrid on deadline day.

Lyon held firm over Arsenal’s heavy interest in their playmaker but Wright has called for Arsenal to not stand down in their pursuit – insisting the club are still crying out for creativity in the middle of the pitch.

Speaking after the 1-0 victory at Manchester United, Wright told Premier League Productions: ‘It is [important] because it’s something that’s continually labelled towards Arsenal, that they can’t beat the big-six teams.

‘I think that was something that was a little while back now, not since [Arteta’s] been there.

‘I think the mentality has changed, the culture in what he’s doing has changed, the intensity and the way he wants to play. It’s all changed, it’s a new Arsenal in what they’re trying to do going forward.

‘If he can continue to improve, like players improve with his coaching, and then he’s then able to add to that with Aouar, who they’re trying to get in the midfield alongside Partey, then you’ve got someone who can create for the forwards.

‘So it’s all looking good and winning games like this will only stand you in good stead and give confidence to the team.’

Partey shone in the heart of midfield as the Gunners finally ended their hoodoo against the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ away from home.

Before Sunday’s victory, which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the winning goal in from the penalty spot, they hadn’t beaten one of the traditional top six away since Manchester City in January 2015.

Partey gave Arsenal that combative edge, and allowed Arteta’s side to dominate the tempo of the game against United’s midfield.

However, Arsenal are still in desperate need of a playmaker to allow Aubameyang and Co to flourish.

Arsenal boast the best defensive record in the Premier League so far, conceding just seven times in as many games, but up front they have struggled to find the right balance.

They have only scored nine times in the top-flight, with talisman Aubameyang netting just the twice.
