Yenagoa – The abducted 80-year-old Madam Betinah Benson, mother of the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government (SSG), Konbowei Benson, is still held by her abductors 24 hours after the incident.
She was kidnapped on Tuesday night by some gunmen at her residence in the Old Assembly Quarters in Yenagoa.
The police said on Wednesday that the octogenarian’s abductors were dressed in military camouflage when they stormed her residence and took her away to an unknown destination at 11pm.
The police also said they had launched a manhunt for the rescue of Madam Benson.
It was gathered that the assailants had not made contacts with the family as of the time of filing this report on Thursday.
The SSG has kept mum on the incident as he did not answer calls made to his phone number.
Also, the spokesman for the State Police Command, SP Asinim Butswat, neither picked his calls nor responded to a text message sent to him by our correspondent.
It is the second time in nine years that the mother of the former Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly would be kidnapped.
In January 2013, a gang of gunmen abducted Benson’s mother at her residence in their village, Korokorosei, in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
Also, in May 2014, the SSG’s mother-in-law, Madama Ogboro Orumo Dark, aged 86, was kidnapped at her residence in Seibiri compound, also in coastal Korokorosei.
