ENUGU – It was a bloody day in Enugu on Wednesday evening following the attack launched by unknown gunmen at a police checkpoint in Obeagu-Amechi Community in Enugu South Local Government Area.
It was gatherd that scored were killed during the attack which includes four policemen and unidentified persons.
Further checks by DAILY INDEPENDENT revealed that a police van was also set ablaze during the attack while some residents and passers-by were also shot dead.
An eye witnessed account told DAILY INDEPENDENT that the shooting spree between the gunmen and police lasted for over four hours on Wednesday night thereby causing panic and tension in the area.
The source said he identified four policemen, one pastor and a neighborhood watch officer among the dead who have since been deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku – Ozalla mortuary.
He said: “Even though the police repelled the attack, the gunmen came in large numbers with weapons which made them take over the area with shooting as residents ran for safety.”
When contacted, the police spokesperson of Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, said “Information surrounding the shooting incidents in the evening hours , 21/07/2021, where Police Operatives were allegedly attacked by yet-to-be identified gunmen at checkpoints in Obeagu-Amechi in Enugu South LGA and Amagunze in Nkanu East LGA are still sketchy.
“Meanwhile, preliminary investigations have commenced. Further development will be communicated,” he said.
